CLIENT OVERVIEW
Erie Insurance (ERIE) is a Fortune 500 company with operations in 12 states and Washington, D.C. The company was founded in 1925 with a mission to emphasize service excellence above all else. It sells auto, home, commercial, and life insurance through a network of 13,000 independent agents and has 6M+ policies in force.

BUSINESS CHALLENGE
To modernize insurance policy processes and enhance its reporting and analytics capabilities, Erie Insurance had built a centralized on-premises data hub, powered by the Progress MarkLogic Data Hub (DH).

After years of use, ERIE needed to enhance its MarkLogic DH implementation to increase storage and enable the ability to quickly spin up new environments or proof-of-concept clusters to provide more responsive support and growth options for the enterprise. The company decided to migrate to MarkLogic on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

ERIE turned to its long-term partner, ValueMomentum — who was involved in the early stages of the implementation — to support the migration effort.

SOLUTION OFFERED
Moving its MarkLogic DH implementation to the cloud required ERIE to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the data migrated from legacy systems. Since ERIE had a wide variety of data sources, including structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from both modern and legacy systems, this proved to be a challenge given their access methods, data quality, data governance, and complex business rules.

ERIE worked with ValueMomentum to design and develop the cloud environment, create data harmonization workflows, and test and deploy the application. As part of this project, data was extracted; transformed to fit a harmonized data model; and loaded into MarkLogic DH, a subject area mart (SAM), and an earned data mart (EDM), creating a unified view of policy details, coverages, endorsements, premiums, etc.

The Consolidated Data Source (CDS), a part of ERIE’s new Enterprise Data Hub, consolidated policy data from modern policy administration systems and soon after, ERIE’s legacy policy, billing, and claims systems as well. This consolidated data was made available for system-to-system interactions, search, advanced analytics and reporting, and more.

The Customer Information Management (CIM) system, another critical component of ERIE’s Enterprise Data Hub, consolidated customer data from policy administration and other systems, harmonizing it into a unified 360-degree and cross-portfolio view of each customer.

As the application moved into production, ValueMomentum provided ERIE with ongoing development, support, and maintenance, as well as system and workload updates, and enhancements to MarkLogic on AWS to support business needs.

VALUE DELIVERED
MarkLogic DataHub on AWS provides a single source of truth for ERIE, enhancing operational efficiency, reducing data inconsistencies, and enabling better decision-making through improved analytics. It also provides insights into customer behavior, preferences, and risk profiles, informing strategies for marketing, product development, and pricing.

Underwriters, actuaries, product owners, and other business users can access CDS to search for policies, view policy details, and analyze policy performance metrics. CDS enables efficient policy-centric reporting and analysis, such as policy count reports, premium trend analysis, policy risk assessments, and earned premium reports. This supports use cases like identifying profitable policy segments, monitoring policy retention, and informing product pricing decisions.

MarkLogic DataHub on AWS provides a single source of truth for ERIE, enhancing operational efficiency, reducing data inconsistencies, and enabling better decision-making through improved analytics.

CIM and CDS also enable ERIE to retire legacy systems, resulting in IT cost savings and a streamlined application landscape. These tools demonstrate the value of unified, reliable data platforms in driving operational efficiency, analytics- driven decision-making, and business transformation.

Ultimately, migrating to MarkLogic on AWS foster agility, data-driven decision-making, and operational efficiency, driving ERIE’s business success in a competitive landscape.
